Iridology
What is Iridology?
Known as Windows to the Soul, our eyes impart information to those who can interpret it. For example, our state of vitality and health, as indicated by tired, bloodshot or eyes with dark circles under them. Whilst Indian Ayurvedic practice recognizes eye colour is part of a person's constitution (dosha), traditionally, the Chinese use the shape, size and set of the eyes to discern health tendencies.
Constitutional Iridology is the study and analysis of the coloured portion of the eye or iris (plural, irides), to determine factors which might be relevant in the prevention and treatment of disease – also to attain optimum health. Iridologists study the textures, colours and markings in the irides, which are unique to each of us – did you know there are roughly 200 differentiating signs which may be mapped in the average iris? They’re more uniquely reliable than finger-prints.
& how do Iridologists work?
Iridologists map the characteristics in a person’s irides, revealing valuable information about that individual’s constitutional strengths and weaknesses. This helps practitioners to pinpoint the origin of health issues, supporting their assessment of the most suitable therapeutic therapies. Patients become more aware of what they can do to help themselves which is empowering.
Irides are categorised by 3 main colour types:
-
blue-eyed constitution or Lymphatic Types, common to north Europeans
-
pure brown-eyed constitution or Haematogenic Types (typically those of Mediterranean; Middle Eastern; African & Indian origin)
-
a combination both (part blue; part brown) termed the Mixed Biliary Type(in which the person inherits strengths/weaknesses of both constitutions).
Although the link between iris colour and heredity is medically acknowledged, it's rarely used in practice. However, Iridology is a fascinating and supportive tool for disease prevention and health promotion strategies.
Why Iridology?
& how can it help you?
Complementary to the other modalities I practise, Iridology provides vital information required to establish the root cause of ailments, revealing information about:
the body’s genetic strengths and weaknesses
levels of inflammation and toxaemia
the efficiency of the eliminative systems and organs
Iridologists do not diagnose disease, however Iridology enables us to get behind the symptoms, the underlying causes. A full Case history is still required and includes:
actual confirmed diagnoses and presenting symptoms
personal and family medical history
secondary symptoms that suggest underlying tendencies or pathologies
(e.g. hypoglycaemia as a precursor to diabetes)
potential stress and/or emotional factors
Iridology is
-
an effective assessment tool which aids compliance through understanding - a major key to therapeutic success and effective practice
-
a visual aid to patient-practitioner communication, improving understanding and learning, the patient's compliance and experience
-
a safe, non-invasive analytical science, easily integrated with both modern and complementary medicine
-
beneficial, potentially revealing many aspects of an individual’s health - an iris picture may suggest that where there is a problem, more than one organ may be involved or that some emotional or mental element exists
-
pro-choice, as more appropriate advice may be given, leading to a wider choice of treatment options
-
empowering - it affirms the uniqueness of each individual and their power to manage his or her own health
In the hands of Naturopaths who are trained in the pathology of disease pathways, anatomy and physiology, Iridology provides valuable information.
